Wildplaces
Performers
Anna Fraser – soprano
Diana Weston – piano and harpsichord
Mary Sambell – piano
Wildplaces are everywhere – massive or tiny, obscure or obvious, natural or in the streets. This concert rejoices in songs that are about wildplaces. We premiere Diana Blom’s latest work – a collection of songs based on wild-things found in Australia, where you would expect much that is wild.
Less obviously from Italy. Handel in his early twenties spent three years in Rome under the auspices of several cardinals where he refined his skills in composing hundreds of cantatas. Many of these reflected the presence of the countryside and natural phenomena.
Mendelssohn too, delighted in Italy and on his tour discovered and revelled in its vistas and landscapes, and also in the many towns’ street carnivals and festive dances – wildness of a different sort. Hence, his glorious ‘Italian Symphony’ played here in true Romantic style, as an arrangement for piano duo.
