Young Handel

Young Handel

Stimulated by the atmosphere of the patrons who encouraged and supported him, Handel produced vast quantities of cantatas during his youthful days in Italy. Though not regularly performed today, they often formed the basis of arias within his much more well-known operas and oratorios. Together with sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord suites from this period, they demonstrate the bounty of the young man Handel’s fertile imagination. With Anna Fraser (soprano), Shaun Ng (viola da gamba) and Diana Weston (harpsichord).

Handel’s cantatas, unlike his operas and oratorios, were all written within a fixed period of his life – between 1706 and 1723. Although unpublished in his life-time (unlike nearly all his other works), and the least well-known of his output, the cantatas were never discarded or forgotten by their composer; rather they formed the basis of subsequent songs and arias within other more substantial works – his operas, oratorios, and instrumental suites. The cantatas were composed during the period of aristocratic patronage that Handel enjoyed as a young man. They reflect the interests, desires and imaginings of his patrons the cardinals Pamphili, Colonna , Ottoboni, and the Marquis Ruspoli and the Medici court in Italy; as well as elector Georg Ludwig at Hanover and the future Duke of Chandos in England. As a member of the Arcadian Academy in Rome, and subsequently in the private salons of courts in Hanover and London, Handel hobnobbed with men of intellect and education who expressed themselves in poetry and texts referencing traditional Greek myths and legends.
