The Bach-Abel London Series
“The small is great when it is written naturally..” Leopold Mozart, of JC Bach
For nearly 20 years Johann Christian Bach and his friend Carl Friedrich Abel ran a subscription series of concerts in London, contributing as players – Abel as a virtuoso gambist, Christian as a harpsichordist – at the same time supplying a steady stream of new music. Christian’s music bears very little resemblance to his father’s complex abstruse style. He was the master melody-maker, one who was admired and emulated by young Mozart amongst many others.
Sample a fragment of the highly successful Bach-Abel London series with Shaun Ng (viola da gamba), Stephen Freeman (violin), Shaun Warden (violin) and Diana Weston (harpsichord).
