Square Piano

Once at the heart of every Australian home that could afford it, the ‘square’ piano has long been regarded as no more than a piece of furniture, unwanted, unloved, in the corner of a museum or historic home. Now, people are starting to discover that these instruments have lovely voices, warm, human and unique.  I hope to demonstrate this in this recording. The instrument in question is a Robertson from c. 1835, partially restored, dusted, cleaned, with bright new strings, and moth-eaten felts replaced.

Music includes sonatas for piano forte by Cramer, Pleyel and JC Bach and a set of variations by Haydn.
