Between the generation of Johann Sebastian Bach (b. 1685) and his youngest son John Christian (d. 1782) quite a few composers gravitated towards London in the course of their careers. Two such were back-to-back rivals Georg Friedrich Handel and Giovanni Bononcini, vying for the title of ‘most popular opera-composer’. Another pair took a different approach – John Christian Bach and Carl Friedrich Abel formed a long-standing partnership, together running their own successful concert series.

Not so the great Johann Sebastian Bach who never set foot outside Germany.
